Richard Boyette is a Partner in the Raleigh office of Cranfill Sumner & Hartzog LLP, where his practice has consisted of a wide variety of defense and commercial litigation. Currently, his litigation practice concentrates in legal and appraiser malpractice and commercial litigation.

Beginning in the early 1990's, Richard developed an active mediation practice, and is recognized as one of the top mediators in North Carolina. He has mediated approximately 1300 disputes in a broad range of subject matters, including personal injury and wrongful death, contract, construction defect, employment relations, medical and other professional liability, product liability, medical device liability, insurance coverage, condemnation, intellectual property and stockbroker/customer disputes.

In addition to litigation and mediation, Richard's practice includes commercial real estate transactions, including entity formation, land acquisition and construction and permanent financing. Richard has also advised and represented businesses in employment and contract disputes, and serves as general counsel to a commercial general contractor.

Richard has been active in DRI in many capacities, and served as its president in 2004-2005. At his urging, DRI established the National Foundation for Judicial Excellence, a charitable foundation having as its mission the education of state court judges. Richard has served on the board of directors of the NFJE since it was founded, and currently serves as its vice president.

Richard is a graduate of the University of North Carolina (B.A., 1974; J.D., with honors, 1977). He was admitted to the North Caroline bar in 1977 and is admitted to practice in all state and federal courts in North Carolina, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court. From 1977-1978, Richard served as a Law Clerk to Chief Judge Walter E. Brock, North Carolina Court of Appeals followed by an appointment as an Assistant District Attorney, Twelfth Judicial District from 1978-1980.
