steve puiszis is a highly experienced trial and appellate lawyer with a wide ranging practice. his areas of concentration include civil rights, professional liability, commercial litigation and class actions. years ago he stopped counting the number of civil and criminal cases he has taken to verdict.
mr. puiszis currently serves as a national director for dri. he has been a member of dri's judicial task force since 2007 and has served as the chair of the judicial task force since 2010. steve was the editor of dri's latest publication on judicial independence, without fear or favor in 2011, and also drafted and edited standards for determining what constitutes unwarranted criticism of the judiciary. he has been a member of dri's amicus committee since 2010, serves as the board liasion to dri's life, health and disability committee and formerly served on the sldo relationship committee from 2007 to 2010. he was the illinois state representative to dri from 2007-2010.
steve was the president of the illinois association of defense counsel (idc)in 2006 and served on the idc's executive committee from 2002 through 2007. in 2011, he received the idc's distinguished member award. steve is a fellow in american bar foundation and he also is a member of the adta and iadc. he also is a member of the seventh circuit's electronic discovery pilot program committee.
steve serves as the deputy general counsel of his firm, hinshaw & culbertson llp,is the head of its electronic discovery response team, and is a member of the firm's business litigation and governmental practice groups. he established a firm sponsored blog on electronic discovery called practical ediscovery, which can be found at www.practicalediscovery.com. steve is a 1979 graduate of loyola university of chicago school of law. before joing hinshaw, from 1979 through 1984 he served as an assistant state's attorney in the special prosecution and general criminal divisions of the cook county state's attorney's office.
steve is the author of illinois governmental tort and section 1983 civil rights liability, third edition, published by matthew bender, now lexis publishing (with yearly supplements). steve also wrote a book chapter on ediscovery entitled ediscovery and enterprise risk management, which was published in the enterprise risk management handbook for healthcare entities by the american health lawyers association in 2009. his publications include law review articles on the use of peremptory challenges in jury selection and on the class action fairness act of 2005, and a law review article that is currently at press addresses the first amendment rights of students involving their use of social media and the internet. his full bio can be found at http://www.hinshawlaw.com/spuiszis/
