For more than four decades, Mike has represented property and casualty insurers in disputes with their policyholders over insurance coverage -- at the claims stage, in trial courts, and on appeal. He is widely regarded as one of the leading attorneys in the United States representing insurers in coverage matters. Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business reports that Mike is “a good guy—a very solid, very smart lawyer,” and that he is “one of the most sophisticated coverage guys in Chicago.” The Best Lawyers in America named Mike the 2015 Chicago Insurance Law “Lawyer of the Year,” based on particularly impressive voting averages he received during the nationwide peer assessment process. He has served as national coverage counsel to several major property and casualty insurers in its mass tort and environmental coverage cases, and has been lead counsel for insurers in significant mass tort coverage litigation (asbestos, lead paint, silica, breast implants, pharmaceutical products, and medical devices), environmental coverage suits, managed care professional liability matters, disputes between excess and primary insurers, policy rescission actions, and high stakes disputes over the insurer’s right to appoint defense counsel. Mike drafts policy language, has administered claims programs, and has been retained as a consultant and expert witness on insurance issues. He serves as Chair of the DRI Insurance Law Committee (2012 - present), and previously was the committee’s, Vice-Chair (2010 - 12). He has authored amicus briefs for the insurance industry’s leading trade associations, for many years taught a law school course at ITT Chicago-Kent College of Law on insurance law, and his articles and book chapters on insurance law topics often are cited by courts as persuasive authority.
