John C.S. Pierce is an attorney at Sirote & Permutt. John devotes his practice to litigation and appeals primarily in the areas of construction, transportation, professional liability, products liability, business disputes and insurance matters as well as corporate formation and guidance.
He is admitted in Alabama state and federal courts and Northern District of Florida. John is also admitted to the bar of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and the United States Supreme Court and has numerous reported decisions. He has trial, appellate, mediation and arbitration experience throughout Alabama, Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle.
John is committed to helping defense lawyers serve as thought leaders in the fair and progressive development of the law and is a frequent speaker and writer. He serves as the Vice-Chair of the Jury Preservation Task Force and on the Committee Engagement Committee. He helped Chair DRI's inaugural Deposition Institute in Chicago, September 9-12, 2014 and moderated the "Twenty-first Century Rainmaking" panel at the 2014 Annual Meeting. He served on the Steering Committee for the 2014 and 2015 Annual Meetings, chairing Marketing for the latter. He also moderated the "Future of the Legal Profession" panel discussion at the 2015 Annual Meeting. He presented, "Time for a Change: The Battle over Price Spread and Collateral Source" at the Defense Research Institute Annual Meeting, moderated a panel discussion of in-house product manufacturer counsel dealing with legacy products, entitled, "Post-Sale Duties and the Legacy of the Restatement Third," at the April 2011 Defense Research Institute Product Liability Meeting, co-presented "Dealing with the Difficult Expert Witness" to the Defense Research Institute Trial Tactics Seminar last March and presented, "Multi-Circuit Litigation: Advocating for a State System of Claim Aggregation" to the Alabama Defense Lawyers Summer Meeting.
He also presented "Professor Plum in the Parlor with A Candlestick: Clues to Effective Accident Investigation" to the International Association of Defense Counsel Construction Law Program and, "Inside, Outside, Upside Down: Partnering With In-House Counsel In Tough Economic Times" at the Defense Research Institute Annual Meeting in October 2009. John has published, "To Twombly Or Not To Twombly --That Is The Question" in DRI's "For the Defense," "Is Abnormal Becoming the New Normal In Alabama," in Mealey's Litigation Report, Vol. 22 #20 and co-edited the State-by-State Price-Spread Damages Compendium for DRI's Trial Tactics Committee which will be published in the Spring of 2012.
John is a member of The International Association of Defense Counsel, The Defense Research Institute, the Product Liability Advisory Council, the American Bar Association, the Alabama State Bar, the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association and the Mobile County Bar Association. He currently chairs DRI's Scaffolding, Cranes and Aerial Devices (SCAD) Specialized Litigation Group to the Product Liability Committee, is Vice-Chair of the Trial Tactics Committee and serves on the Public Policy Committee.
John graduated from The University of Alabama School of Law in 1991, where he served as Phi Alpha Delta Justice, and was a Member of Bench and Bar Legal Honor Society and the Farrah Law Society. He was the Lead Article Editor for Law & Psychology Review, 1990-1991 and authored, "Selecting the Perfect Jury: Use of Jury Consultants in Voir Dire," 14 Law & Psychology Review 167, Spring, 1990.
