Member Bio
Jim Bryan is a member of Nexsen Pruet, LLC in its Greensboro, North Carolina, office and co-chair of its insurance litigation practice group and insurance bad faith defense group. An active DRI member, he is the chair of the Insurance Law Committee’s First Party Property Subcommittee and was program chair of the Insurance Coverage and Claims Institute conference in April 2013. He is also a member of DRI’s Life, Health and Disability, Trucking Law, Commercial Litigation, and Diversity Committees.

For 25 years, Jim has concentrated his legal practice on civil litigation, primarily insurance coverage, extra-contractual/bad faith, trucking accidents, environmental, premises liability, and lender liability. He has frequently navigated through protracted discovery battles in bad faith litigation, one such battle spanning six years, including a trip to the North Carolina Supreme Court. He has tried many cases in the state and federal courts of North Carolina. He obtained his undergraduate degree from UNC at Chapel Hill in 1981 and law degree from Wake Forest University in 1989.

In addition to DRI, at the local level he is president of the Greensboro Bar Association and a master in the Guilford Inn of Court. He is a member of the Trucking Industry Defense Association (“TIDA”), the North Carolina Trucking Association, and the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys. Jim also is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association's Environmental Section and Litigation Section.

His bad faith insurance and transportation articles have appeared in For The Defense, Covered Events, The Transportation Lawyer, In-Transit, and many other publications. Jim is a frequent speaker at local, state and national conferences and seminars. Recent topics include ethics for litigators, truck accident defense, insurance coverage, evidence, insurance bad faith defense, and civil litigation.

In his spare time, he enjoys spending quality time with his wife and two sons. A native of Connecticut with family throughout the northeast, he looks forward to taking family trips “up north” to reconnect with his roots. Back in NC, he especially enjoys playing competitive tennis (his senior’s team won the 2012 State Championship), watching his 19-year-old play in tennis tournaments throughout the southeastern United States, and helping his 22-year-old in college pursue a music entrepreneur career. At the end of the day, he loves to read books, often reading to his wife who invariably falls asleep after the second page.
