Todd W. Smyth is an experienced trial lawyer who focuses his practice on the defense of the healthcare industry in a wide range of litigation. He proudly represents physicians, drug and medical device manufacturers, pharmacies and pharmacists, nursing homes, assisted-living providers, dentists, nurses and other allied health professionals in professional negligence and licensing matters. He has successfully tried numerous medical cases to verdict in both state and federal courts in South Carolina and as a result has been repeatedly recognized in The Best Lawyers in America® - Medical Malpractice Law. He was recently selected as Best Lawyers' 2012 Lawyer of the Year for Medical Malpractice- Defense in Charleston, SC. He has also been recognized as a South Carolina Super Lawyer- in the area of Personal Injury Defense-Medical Malpractice.

Todd has argued and won a case before the South Carolina Supreme Court that essentially eliminated the tort of medical battery in South Carolina – the case was recognized as one of the top-three most important decisions in South Carolina for 2008 by Lawyers Weekly (July 7, 2008, issue). He is also a recognized leader and active in national litigation organizations, currently serving as Vice Chair of The Defense Research Institute’s (DRI) Medical Liability Committee and Vice Chair of the International Association of Defense Counsel's (IADC) Medical Liability Committee. He is a frequent speaker and presenter on healthcare litigation matters and has also recently served as a faculty member for the IADC's 2011 Trial Academy held at Stanford University Law School.
