James was born in Jacksonville, Florida. He graduated cum laude from Birmingham Southern College in 1990 with a B.S. in Business Administration. He was a member of Sigma Tau Delta.

James obtained his Juris Doctorate from the University of Alabama School of Law and was admitted to the Alabama State Bar in 1995. At the University of Alabama, James served as acting Editor-in-Chief of the Law and Psychology Review. He was a member of the Bench and Bar Honor Society and was elected Associate Justice to the Honor Court. He is a member of the Birmingham Bar Association, the Alabama State Bar, the American Bar Association, the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association, the Defense Research Institute, the Maritime Law Association of the United States, the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute and the Atlanta Claims Association.
