Amy Mass joined The Hanover Insurance group in 2003, and currently serves as Vice President and Counsel for The Hanover Insurance Group in the Office of General Counsel in Howell, MI. She is responsible for Government Affairs, Regulatory Matters, and Legal Support for the Midwest Region, including Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.
Before moving into her current role, she was based in Columbus, Ohio and served The Hanover as the National Counsel for the Schools Program, Managing Attorney for the Ohio and Indiana Staff Counsel Offices, Senior Trial Attorney and Trial Attorney. She began her legal career clerking for the Superior Court of New Hampshire and the Michigan Court of Appeals, and practicing with several Columbus firms, including Schottenstein, Zox & Dunn, Gallagher, Gams, Pryor, Tallan & Littrell, and Isaac, Brant, Ledman & Teetor.
In addition, Amy has been an Adjunct Professor of Dispute Resolution at Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio since 2004, teaching Dispute Resolution. She is a frequent lecturer in the areas of ADR, Negotiation, and Mediation for organizations including DRI, the American Bar Association, the Ohio State Bar Association, and the Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorneys.
Currently, Amy serves on the Board of Directors for DRI, the Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorneys, Michigan Chamber of Commerce, the Michigan Insurance Coalition, and the Illinois Insurance Association. She currently chairs the Michigan Insurance Coalition and is the Immediate Past Chair of the DRI Corporate Counsel Committee. She is also a member of the International Association of Defense Counsel and Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel. She Chaired the Ohio State Bar Association Staff Counsel Committee (2008-2010) and served as the Chair of the OSBA Committee and Section Advisory Council. Previous positions include: Chair, OACTA ADR Committee; Chair, 2008 OACTA Annual Meeting; Chair, OACTA Commercial Litigation Committee; Moderator, 2007 OACTA Conferences.
She earned her B.A., Cum Laude and With Distinction in her Major, from Connecticut College in 1992 and her J.D. from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 1995. She is licensed to practice in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana and the Ohio and Indiana Federal Courts. She grew up in Columbus, Ohio and graduated from the Columbus School for Girls.
After living in New Hampshire, Michigan, and Columbus, she relocated back to Michigan in 2011, and currently lives in Howell with her husband, C.W. Banfield, and their two dogs, Reagan and Truman.
