JOHN J. GARVEY, III, is a shareholder with and Co-Founder of
Garvey | Shearer | Nordstrom, PSC.

He is licensed in state and federal courts in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.

John has tried over 50 cases to jury verdict.

His 27+ years of practice experience include handling all manner of litigation, concentrating in defense of personal injury, product defect, construction, and surety claims, and litigating and advising clients on insurance coverage, extra-contractual/bad-faith, and transportation law issues. John’s practice is driven toward the earliest possible assessment of risk. He works with each client to formulate a plan of action to best serve the client’s needs and provide the best possible result, whether through alternative dispute resolution or verdict.

In addition to numerous defense verdicts in state and federal court, John has briefed and argued cases in numerous appellate courts including the Kentucky Supreme Court and the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

John has been a member of DRI since 2004. He is a Past President for the Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorneys (OACTA), which celebrated its 50th Year during his tenure in 2016.

John was twice selected by Cincinnati Magazine as an Ohio Super Lawyers Rising Star, and was selected in 2010 as an Ohio Super Lawyer. He was selected as a Super Lawyer for Kentucky in 2018. He has spoken frequently to companies and other attorneys on a variety of insurance law, transportation law, and other topics.

John serves our profession with strong involvement in legal professional associations like DRI and OACTA, and serves the public through his involvement with Pregnancy Center East, Inc., where he served as President of the Board of Trustees for 4 years, and now continues service on the Board of Trustees, serves as a counselor and consultant for the past 32 years at the American Legion Department of Ohio Buckeye Boys State Program, and serves the NKU Chase College of Law as a member of the Dean's Board of Visitors. He is a member of the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Leadership Northern Kentucky Class of 2010, and the Cincinnati Bar Association Cincinnati Academy of Leadership for Lawyers Class of 2006.

In June, 2014 John was inducted into the American Legion Buckeye Boys State Hall of Fame.

In October, 2014, John was awarded NKU Chase Alumni Association's Exceptional Service Award.

John is a also a member of the Ohio State, Kentucky, Indiana, Cincinnati, and Northern Kentucky Bar Associations. He served as President of the Northern Kentucky Bar Association in 2009.

John received his Juris Doctor from Northern Kentucky University – Salmon P. Chase College of Law, where he served as Student Bar Association President and Editor of The Paper Chase.

He received an Honors Bachelor of Arts (Classics) and a B.A. in History from Xavier University.

John’s interests include military history and law and public policy, and he enjoys charity work, playing golf, and traveling with his family.
