Jonathan Hodes is a lawyer and mediator with over 25 years of experience in legal practice in British Columbia. He provides practical and cost-effective advice to insurers, brokers and other clients located in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and elsewhere. With degrees in Canadian and American law, he has extensive experience assisting foreign insurers in inter-jurisdictional and cross-border claims. He has appeared before the courts of British Columbia, Alberta, Nunavut and Yukon Territories, as well as the Supreme Court of Canada. A past president of Canadian Defence Lawyers , he is also an active member of the DRI and an elected member of the International Association of Defense Counsel and the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys .
His practice includes defending claims under a variety of insurance policies, including product liability, general liability, errors and omissions (E&O), directors and officers (D&O), environmental liability and other specialty risks. He regularly acts as insurance coverage counsel for primary and third party insurance policies, and also assists in drafting policy wordings. He has appeared before the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the British Columbia Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada on insurance coverage issues, and has also provided opinion testimony before the Washington State Superior Court .
Jonathan is also passionate about dispute resolution. He completed Pepperdine University’s prestigious Mediating the Litigated Case program and serves as a mediator in civil litigation. After nearly three decades of practice, he has earned a reputation as a reasonable and pragmatic professional with a proven ability to understand all facets of a dispute and achieve sensible and cost-effective results in even the most complex cases. These skills are essential in mediation, where he applies them to help parties resolve their disputes without the cost, stress and uncertainty of trial. His mediation practice covers a variety of insurance claims, including liability and coverage issues, as well as uninsured claims, employment disputes and general litigation. He has been retained to mediate cases in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario, and is available to appear in any jurisdiction, either virtually or in person.
