A graduate of Siena College and St. John’s University School of Law, Tom has dedicated his practice to high exposure, catastrophic and complex civil defense litigation. Tom has been called upon to serve as National Coordinating Defense Counsel and has been admitted pro hac vice in numerous jurisdictions outside of New York.

Tom serves on the Board of Directors of the Defense Research Institute (DRI). Tom served two terms as the New York State Representative to DRI from 2009 to 2015. He is a Past Chair of the DRI Insurance Roundtable Steering Committee and Chairs the DRI Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Committee.

Tom serves on the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) Executive Committee and in the NYSBA House of Delegates as a Member-at Large. Tom also serves on the NYSBA Coronavirus Emergency Task Force for Solo and Small Firms, and on the NYSBA Emergency Task Force on Mandatory Vaccination. Tom previously served as NYSBA Membership Chair, and as Chair of the NYSBA Torts, Insurance and Compensation Law (TICL) Section.

Tom was elected to the Board of Directors of the New York County Lawyers Association and serves as Co-Chair of the Membership Committee.

Tom serves as Treasurer of the New York City Trial Lawyers Alliance (NYCTLA). The NYCTLA Board is composed of civil litigators that represent both plaintiffs and defendants and hosts bench/bar events to promote collegial, professional relationships between bench and bar. Tom is the Chair of the NYCTLA Giving Committee that awards annual scholarships to law students that excel in Civil Trial Advocacy to students attending St. John’s, Cardozo, Fordham, Brooklyn, Hofstra, and New York Law Schools.

Tom served as President of the Defense Association of New York (DANY) (2008-2009), was Chair of the DANY Board of Directors (2009-2010). During Tom’s tenure DANY moved from being a NYC Metropolitan Association of Civil Defense Attorneys to become a Statewide Specialty Bar Association. Tom continues as an active member of the DANY Board.

Tom has served since 1998 by appointment of the Presiding Judge, New York State Appellate Division, First Department, as a member of the First Department Character and Fitness Committee.

Tom is a member of the Torts Advisory Committee (TAC) for Supreme Court, New York County. The TAC is comprised of Judges and Attorneys dedicated to improving the administration of civil justice in Supreme Court in Manhattan.

Tom serves as an officer of the Emerald Association of Long Island. The Emerald Association was founded in Brooklyn in 1839 and has operated since that time for the purpose of raising funds for the support of underprivileged children being cared for by the Diocese of Brooklyn.

Tom was a contributing author for the New York State Bar Association's, Post-Trial Practice and Procedures in New York. He is a frequent lecturer on Civil Trial Practice, Negotiating Strategies and Alternative Dispute Resolution.

Tom is the recipient of the DRI Outstanding State Representative Award, DRI Exceptional Performance Citation, New York State Bar Association Section Diversity Challenge Champion Award as Chair of the TICL Section, The New York City Brehon Law Society Outstanding Attorney Award, The New York State Bar Association John E. Leach Memorial Award and The Institute of Jewish Humanities Defense Lawyer of the Year Award.

The Defense Association of New York presented the James S. Conway Award to Tom in recognition of his dedication to the ideals of diversity, equality, professionalism and dignity for all that seek justice through our Courts.

Tom has been selected for the New York Metro Super Lawyers list, The Best Lawyers in America and the Irish Legal 100, a listing of leading attorneys of Irish Heritage across the United States.

The firm Maroney O’Connor LLP was formed in August 2005. The firm focuses its practice on providing quality legal services to insurance companies, municipalities and self-insured corporations.

Maroney O'Connor LLP works to cost effectively manage and defend litigation resulting from serious construction site, product liability, premises liability, professional liability and transportation incidents. The firm also represents New York employers with respect to Third Party Grave Injury cases.

The firm has served as U.S. and North America Coordinating Defense Counsel for product claims representing foreign and domestic manufacturers and distributors.
