Ms. Williams' practice focuses on complex commercial litigation, including intellectual property and product liability matters. Ms. Williams handles all phases of litigation in state and federal courts and has overseen large scale e-discovery. Ms. Williams' experience includes defending corporations against trademark and copyright infringement claims, unfair competition claims, trade secret litigation, commercial disparagement claims and serving as local patent infringement counsel. Her product liability experience includes a putative class action matter in federal court, among others. Ms. Williams has practiced law in both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
Ms. Williams is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association. Se has served on the Board of Governors, the Judiciary Committee, the Legal and Technology Committee, the Public Service Committee and the Women in the Law Division. She was chair of the Women in the Law Division and the co-chair of the Public Service Committee. She was also named a 2012 Allegheny County Bar Foundation Fellow. Moreover, Ms. Williams has volunteered for Allegheny County's Child Custody Conciliation Program and the Criminal Records Expungement Project. Ms. Williams is also actively involved in DRI, the Voice of the Defense Bar. She is currently vice-chair of the Women in the Law Committee and is also a member of the Commercial Litigation, Insurance, Product Liability and Cybersecurity and Data Breach Committees.
SELECTED CASES PROSECUTED OR DEFENDED TO VERDICT, DISMISSAL OR SETTLEMENT
Home Owner v. National Products Manufacturer (W.D. Pa.): Breach of warranty action. Acted as local counsel for team of lawyers defending putative class action suits across the country filed by the same set of plaintiffs’ lawyers. Assisted trial team in successfully moving for dismissal of complaint in part and subsequent summary judgment prior to class certification. Case is on appeal.
Local Ultrasonic Measurement Company v. International Nuclear Power Company (W.D. Pa.): Lanham Act (unfair competition) and Sherman Antitrust claims. Assisted lead trial counsel in representing company that manufactured ultrasonic measurement equipment for nuclear power plants against international nuclear power company that also made measurement equipment for nuclear power plants. Had a lead role in all aspects of electronic discovery efforts. Case settled prior to trial.
Former Local Chapter v. National Non-Profit Conservation Organization (Venango County, PA). Quiet title and fraud action. Acted as lead trial counsel in defending national non-profit organization in a land dispute matter and in asserting counterclaims for fraudulent conveyance and conversion. Case settled prior to trial.
Tenant v. Apartment Complex Owner and Leasing Agent (Allegheny County, PA): Negligence/personal injury action. Acted as lead trial counsel in defending property owner and leasing agent in civil suit brought by tenant for alleged failure to maintain common area of apartment complex. Case settled shortly after expert witness trial depositions and just before start of trial.
Business v. General Contractor (Schuylkill County, PA): Breach of contract/breach of warranty action. Assisted lead trial counsel in defending general contractor in complex multi-party litigation involving alleged construction defects in concrete floor. Case settled before trial.
Restaurant Group v. National Insurance Company Federal District Court (Pittsburgh, Pa.) Assisted with drafting successful motion for summary judgment on behalf of insurer in civil suit brought by insured for insurance coverage for underlying class action based upon the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA).
Smith v. National Life Insurance Company Federal District Court (Pittsburgh, Pa.) Assisted lead trial counsel with obtaining defense verdict and winning counterclaim, including an award of attorneys' fees, in a jury trial on behalf of insurer. Plaintiff brought a civil suit alleging wrongful denial of life insurance benefits. Defended and countersued on the bases of fraud and breach of contract due to plaintiff's misrepresentations regarding the status of his health. The decision was upheld on appeal.
ABC Company v. XYZ Company Federal District Court (Pittsburgh, Pa.) Assisted with representation of defendant business in civil suit brought by business competitor for trademark infringement and unfair business competition. Case settled shortly before trial.
Manufacturer Corp. v. Distributor Corp Federal District Court (Pittsburgh, Pa.) Assisted lead trial counsel in obtaining verdict in favor of company against its former distributor for trademark infringement and unfair competition.
Widow v. ABC Life Insurance Company Federal District Court (Pittsburgh, Pa.) Obtained summary judgment on behalf of insurance company. Plaintiff filed suit claiming insurer had breached life insurance policy allegedly issued to her decedent husband. Successfully argued that no policy of insurance was ever in force between insurer and decedent husband.
Jones v. ABC Manufacturing Company Federal District Court (Pittsburgh, Pa.) Assisted lead trial counsel in obtaining verdict for plaintiff injured by defective machinery during the course of his employment.
Father and Minor Son v. XYZ Manufacturing Company (Allegheny County, Pa.) Assisted in defending equipment manufacturer against strict product liability claims arising from injuries to four-year old child. Case settled before trial.
